CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

3 songs from the 1st hour (7p-8p) of my 02/03/1996 college radio show: Suzy Bogguss’ “Drive South” (including a link to a photo from her Holiday concert in Elgin IL last season), Collin Raye’s “My Kind Of Girl” & Eric Carmen’s “Make Me Lose Control”. [If you noticed the skip ahead from the 1st hour of my 12/02/1995 radio show from last Saturday’s entry HERE, I decided to highlight the 2nd & 3rd hours of my 12/02/1995 radio show, along with all 3 hours of my 12/09/1995 broadcast, during this year’s Holiday season since they are mostly Christmas music!] Also featured: Pontiac Trans AM, photographed by OC,SHer BILL O SR at Wheels On Main, 09/04/2016, downtown W Bend WI

“Drive South”
Suzy Bogguss
Speaking of Christmas, ~1 year ago, I saw Bogguss in concert at Elgin IL Community College & mentioned it in THIS “Quantum Leap” entry HERE.  Just over 2 months earlier, I’d seen Ronnie Milsap in concert (see THIS link HERE). The other Holiday-themed concert I remember was The Oak Ridge Boys a number of years ago at Elgin IL’s Hemmens Auditorium. This song, Bogguss’ biggest tune, debuted 12/05/1992 (exactly 23 years to the date before I saw her in concert), spent 20 weeks on the charts & peaked at #2. It was the last of 4 straight Top 10 tunes that year, preceded by “Outbound Plane” (#9), “Aces” (#9) & “Letting Go” (#6). This Aledo IL-native singer-songwriter-guitarist’s career spanned early 1987 to late 1999, with an extra release in 2001 with Billy Dean. Perhaps an underrated singer, she had 27 singles & notched only 6 Top 10s; the other 2 came in 1993: “Just Like The Weather” (#5) & “Hey Cinderella” (#5; peaked in early 1994). Only 3 other tunes reached the Top 20 for her: 1989’s “Cross My Broken Heart” (#14), 1991’s “Hopelessly Yours” (#12; duet with Lee Greenwood) & 1991’s “Someday Soon” (#12).

“My Kind Of Girl”
Collin Raye
Perhaps 1 of the more difficult things to do while hosting a radio show is playing songs that I don’t particularly like. They say to play what you like, but leaving out songs you don’t like robs listeners of songs they may love, sparking some awesome memories for them. With that in mind, I chose to play this song, instead of 1 of my favorites of his. This tune hit the airwaves 12/03/1994, spent 20 weeks on the charts & claimed #1 (his 3rd chart topper) in early 1995; it was the 8th (of an eventual 11) straight Top 10 tunes, started by his 2nd chart topper, 1992’s “In This Life” (2 weeks), & ending with 1995-6’s “Not That Different” (#3). This DeQueen AR-native singer-songwriter-guitarist’s career spanned mid 1991 to late 2001, including 4 chart toppers; the other 2 are 1991-2’s “Love Me” (3 weeks) & 1998’s “I Can Still Feel You” (2 weeks). Other familiar favorites include 1993’s “Somebody Else’s Moon” (#5), 1994’s “Little Rock” (#2; my favorite of his), 1995’s “If I Were You” (#4), 1995-6’s “What If Jesus Came Back Like That” (#21, featured previously HERE), 1996’s “I Think About You” (#3, 4 weeks) & 1997’s “What The Heart Wants” (#2).

“Make Me Lose Control”
Eric Carmen
Released May 1988, this single [my absolute favorite of his; I love near the end when it goes silent then back into the music] was co-written (with Dean Pitchford) & performed by Carmen, but only appeared on Carmen’s 1988 ‘The Best Of Eric Carmen’ album. It peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while claiming #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Internationally, it reached #8 in Australia, & #2 on Canada’s Top Singles chart & #1 on Canada’s Adult Contemporary chart. The video (below) features Kid Leo, a radio personality who started in Carmen’s hometown Cleveland OH. Carmen had 2 other solo Top 10 tunes on the Billboard Hot 100 chart: 1976’s “All By Myself” (#2) & 1987’s “Hungry Eyes” (#4, from the movie ‘Dirty Dancing’, which prompted Carmen to write & release this featured song). Among his compositions sung by other artists: 1984’s “Almost Paradise” (#7; Mike Reno & Ann Wilson) & 1985’s “Maybe My Baby” (#8, Louise Mandrell). Mandrell & Carmen also teamed up for a version of “As Long As We Got Each Other”.
