This highly popular song was written by these brothers as a “call & response” answer to Jackie Wilson’s “Lonely Teardrops”. Recorded 08/05/1969, the single hit the airwaves 09/21/1959, but never reached higher than #47 on the Billboard Hot 100. In most cases, that would render a song virtually unremembered & unknown. However, that’s not what happened for this song; instead, it catapulted upward to become the brothers’ 1st gold single … solely on its longevity, covered by many artists, including Johnny O’Keefe, Joey Dee & The Starliters, Lulu, Shangri-Las, Kingsmen, Tommy James & The Shondells, The Ronettes, Otis Day & The Knights, Alvin & The Chipmunks, Bon Jovi, Green Day & Robbie Williams. The song is also now played at many sports stadiums.

~25 years after the Isley Brothers’ tune was 1st heard, this song was released in the UK 11/23/1984, then in the US 06/04/1985. Written by Roland Orzabal & Ian Stanley, this song was sung by Orzabal (with Curt Smith joining him on the chorus). Unlike IB’s song, this single not only reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but it claimed that top spot for 3 straight weeks. The song also claimed #1 on the Hot Dance Club Play & Hot Dance Music charts. Internationally, the song topped charts in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Europe, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand & Switzerland, while notching in the Top 5 in Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, S Africa & UK. This song has also since been covered by various artists, including Concrete Blonde, Disturbed, Kirk Franklin & Adam Lambert.
