Lloyd, a Burchard NE native, was an actor, comedian, film director, producer, screenwriter & stunt artist best known for silent comedy films & ranking alongside Charlie Chaplin & Buster Keaton as 1 of the most-popular & influential comedians of the silent film days. He made nearly 200 comedy films, 1914-1947. He also became prominent in radio, emerging as the director & host of “The Old Gold Comedy Theater”, which featured such talents as Fred Allen, June Allyson, Lucille Ball, Ralph Bellamy, Jane Wyman & Alan Young, then appeared on TV as himself after his retirement: “Ed Sullivan’s Toast Of The Town”, “What’s My Line?” & “This Is Your Life”. He married his “leading lady”, Mildred Davis, Saturday, 02/10/1923 in Los Angeles CA. The couple had 2 children (Gloria Lloyd & Harold Clayton Lloyd Jr) & built their Beverly Hills home (“Greenacres”, featuring 44 rooms, 26 bathrooms, 12 fountains, 12 gardens & a 9-hole golf course, between 1926 & 1929). Lloyd died of prostrate cancer, 03/08/1971, 2 years after Davis died of a heart attach in 1969. Davis, a Philadelphia PA native, appeared in many of Lloyd’s silent movies after traveling to LA & catching Hal Roach’s attention; Roach introduced the couple & Lloyd hired Davis to replace Bebe Daniels.
