#1 “Somewhere Out There” | Linda Ronstadt & James Ingram
From the popular 1986 animated film ‘An American Tail’, this song was written by James Horner, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, 1 of 4 songs Steven Spielberg asked them to write for the movie’s soundtrack. The composures hadn’t envisioned a radio-friendly song, but when a version of this was recorded by Ronstadt & Ingram for the movie’s closing credits, they suddenly had a Top 10 tune on their hands. Officially released November 1986, the tune debuted on the Adult Contemporary chart at #31, & eventually reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, March 1987. It was kept from #1 by Huey Lewis & The News’ “Jacob’s Ladder”. The single also won 2 Grammys: Song Of The Year & Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or Television. A few years later, the song was prominently featured in a special 2-part “Designing Women” episode that originally aired 01/01/1990: ‘The 1st Day Of The Last Decade Of The Entire 20th Century’.

#2 “Somewhere Out There” | Our Lady Peace
~15 years after the Ronstadt-Ingram duet, this Canadian band released this single from their 5th studio album, ‘Gravity’, 04/05/2002. The song (1 of my absolute favorites) originated from 2 sets of lyrics written by Raine Maida during Christmas 2001. After its original chart run, the song gained further popularity when it was used for the end credits of the 2005 movie ‘White Noise’ & at the end of a Season 2 “Smallville” episode. In 2002, the song claimed #1 on 2 Canadian charts, while notching on 8 different US Billboard charts: Hot 100 (#44), Radio Songs (#40), Modern Rock Tracks (#7), Mainstream Rock Tracks (#26), Adult Top 40 (#12), Top 40 Tracks (#23), Pop Songs (#19) & Top 40 Adult Recurrents (#10). Prior to this release, the band had Top 10 success on US charts with 1994’s “Starseed” & 1997’s “Clumsy”.
