Jones, originally billed as Charles Jones, was a movie star in the 1920s, 1930s & 1940s, best known for his work in popular western movies. A Vincennes IN native, Jones served 2 stints in the military, & worked extensively as a test driver for the Marmon Motor Car Company in between deployments. Near the end of his movie career, he starred in “Hoofbeats”, a 15-minute radio program, syndicated via electrical transcription; Grape Nuts Flakes sponsored the program produced in the Recordings, Inc. studios. His career was cut short by his death in the Cocoanut Grove (Boston MA) nightclub fire, 11/28/1942, which claimed 492 lives; Monogram Pictures producer Scott R Dunlap, who was hosting a party in honor of Jones, survived (albeit seriously injured). Jones’ movie credits include 1920’s ‘Just Pals’, 1920’s ‘The Last Straw’, 1923’s ‘2nd Hand Love’, 1924’s ‘Not A Drum Was Heard’, 1924’s ‘Against All Odds’, 1930’s ‘The Lone Rider’, 1931’s ‘The Texas Ranger’, 1932’s ‘South Of the Rio Grande’, 1933’s ‘The California Trail’, 1936’s ‘Empty Trails’, 1939’s ‘Unmarried’ & 1942’s ‘Dawn On The Great Divide’, among many others.
