Route 66-based story (by OC,SH’s founder, inspired by his 09/2009 Route 66 road trip)

CHAPTER 72: TO MOUNT OLIVE WE GO

“So, do you think we stopped too soon last night?” the youngest asked while the 2 brothers ate a bowl of cereal & a donut in their hotel room.

“Well,” the eldest replied, glancing at the time, 6:38a. “Yes & no. No because it was a good stopping point. Yes due to what all we want to do today.”

“I see,” the youngest said.

“But,” continued the eldest, “this will be a good ‘test’ to see if we can handle a long day.”

The youngest nodded. “Yeah, we do have a lot scheduled today.”

“If we were going straight to where we plan to stop tonight, it’d be an easy 2 hour or so drive,” the eldest continued. “But … this is Route 66 & it isn’t quite that simple.”

The eldest tossed his cereal bowl, spoon, cup & small plate into the trash & grabbed his log book.

“Let’s see,” the eldest stalled while finding that day’s pages. “From here, we’re headed south to Mount Olive to see the gas station there. Then, we’ll cross back over to the other Route 66 path to visit Benld IL. From there, we’ll stop in Staunton IL to see Henry. You’ll do a brief broadcast from his Ra66it Ranch. Then, we’ll wind our way to St Louis via Edwardsville & Collinsville. In St Louis, weather permitting, you’ll do a live outdoor broadcast from Ted Drewes. We’ll leave there &, hopefully, make it to Sullivan MO to stay at the Meramec Caverns tonight. So, yeah, not much.”

The youngest chuckled, & threw his bowl, spoon, plate & cup into the trash. “Yeah, not much! Think we’ll have to stay in St Louis tonight?”

“Maybe,” the eldest said thoughtfully. “But, I don’t think so. I know our schedule sounds like a lot, & in some ways it is, but if we can get out of here by 7, we could be to Henry’s no later than 8:30a. Stay there a couple hours, including a short radio broadcast for you, & we could then be to Ted Drewes by 1p. Stay there a couple hours, & we could be to Meramec by 6p. Heck, with that timeline, leaving here by 8a would get us to Meramec by 7p. So, I think we’ll be fine. Depending, of course, on when we decide to call home.”

“Yep,” the eldest acknowledged. “Well, let’s get ready to get this show on the road!”

OC,SH PROGRAM ALERT:
I originally created this “Sunday Story” theme to be the exclusive home of my Route 66-based story. However, with Chapter 72 now “in the books” & other stories coming to life, running through my mind, including a possible sequel-continuation of my murder mystery, “Don’t Forget Schuster” (originally published HERE), “Sunday Story” may become home to multiple running stories. If so, I will create additional categories to help differentiate each easier. Stay tuned….
