#1 “Shine” | Collective Soul
Originally released 03/19/1993 & then re-released 10/21/1993, this song is this band’s debut single, the leadoff for the 1994 debut album ‘Hints Allegations & Things Left Unsaid’. The song peaked in 1994-5, claiming #1 for 8 weeks on the Album Rock Tracks chart, then notching at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 & #4 on both the Modern Rock Tracks & Top 40 Mainstream charts. Elsewhere, the song reached #6 in Canada, #8 in Australia, #21 in New Zealand & #25 in Austria. It has since become a staple of 1990s alternative rock. The band’s success continued through the mid-late 1990s with hits like 1995’s “December”, but my favorite song of theirs is 2005’s “Better Now”, which faired best on the Adult Top 40 chart at #9.

#2 “Shine” | Newsboys
The same year Collective Soul’s tune was dominating the airwaves (1994), this band released this song as the 2nd single from their 5th album, ‘Going Public’. Founded in 1985 in Mooloolaba, Queensland, Australia, by Peter Furler & George Perdikis, this Christian Rock band enjoyed their 2nd Christian Rock chart topper in this song; their 1st was 1992’s “I’m Not Ashamed”. Then, between 1994 & 2003, the band notched 17 CR chart toppers, including 1995’s “Truth & Consequences”, 1995’s “Reality”, 1996’s “Let It Go”, 1998’s “Believe”, 2000’s “Beautiful Sound”, 2000’s “Good Stuff” & 2002’s “Million Pieces” (which found its way to mainstream radio).
