CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES
3 songs from the 2nd hour (8p-9p; double plays) of my 11/04/1995 college radio show: Ken Medema’s “Flying Upside Down” & Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “Make A Little Magic” & “Fishing In The Dark”. Also featured: Concept Car 1956 Pontiac Club DeMer.
#1 “Flying Upside Down” | Ken Medema
I was 1st introduced to Medema during a church National Youth Conference at Colorado State University in 1994. During that week, he performed an awesome concert that was uplifting, upbeat, inspirational & moving. This is my favorite song of his; other favorites include “Lord, Listen To Your Children Praying”, “Start Something”, “Color Outside The Lines” & “Just 1 Dance” (which was the 2nd song of the double play during this broadcast). Ken, a Grand Rapids MI-native singer-songwriter-composer, has performed for more than 40 years. Born almost blind, he began playing the piano at age 5, & majored in music therapy (studying piano & voice) at Michigan State University, following that up by working as a music therapist in Fort Wayne IN. Then, in 1973, while at Essex County Hospital, he began performing & recording his own songs, some of his best ones beginning as live improvisations during concerts. He founded Brier Patch Music in 1985.
#2 “Make A Little Magic” | Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
I’ve featured NGDB before, 08/15/2015 HERE & 11/07/2015 HERE, so I won’t repeat the bulk of their history. This particular song was their 2nd top 25 Billboard Hot 100 tune, the followup to 1980’s “American Dream” (with Linda Ronstadt); this song hit the airwaves 08/02/1980 & reached #25 on the BH 100, while notching at #77 on the country charts. Nicolette Larson provides the backing vocals on this single.

#3 “Fishing In The Dark” | Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
Nearly 7 years later after their 1980 tune above, this song debuted 07/11/987, spent 23 weeks on the country charts & claimed #1, their 3rd & final chart topper. This is my Dad’s favorite song of theirs, without a doubt. Other familiar favorites (not mentioned or featured in the prior 2 features linked above) include 1983’s “Shot Full Of Love” (#19), 1986’s “Partners, Brothers & Friends” (#6), 1986’s “Stand A Little Rain” (#5), 1986-7’s “Fire In The Sky” (#7), 1988’s “Workin’ Man” (#4), 1988’s “I’ve Been Lookin’” (#2) & 1988-9’s “Down That Road Tonight” (#6).
