Route 66-based story (by OC,SH’s founder, inspired by his 09/2009 Route 66 road trip)
CHAPTER 69: STARTING THE DAY
Early the next morning, the youngest brother was wide awake … before his older brother, usually 1st to rise in the morning. But, the youngest’s mind was racing with ideas not only for that morning’s broadcast from the Springfield Illinois Route 66 Hotel & Conference Center but also for broadcasts at several other spots along the road. They’d really just started their Route 66 trip, & the youngest was finding himself more excited about it just about every second.
The youngest glanced at the alarm clock radio on the hotel nightstand: 6:25a. He’d gotten, maybe, 6 hours of sleep, but probably more like 5. Yet, oddly, he felt energized & not tired at all. That morning’s broadcast was originally scheduled for 7a local time, but with the impromptu broadcast the night before, Kyle convinced the youngest to delay the start an hour. The brothers had discussed it & decided an hour delay wouldn’t throw their tentative road trip schedule off that much, if at all, anyway.
At 6:30a, the alarm sounded, & the eldest woke up, noticing his brother was already awake. The 2 brothers got ready for the day & went to grab some breakfast before the 8a broadcast.
Meanwhile, about the time the brothers left for breakfast, their sister & her husband were beginning to get up to get breakfast ready for their 2 daughters & son, & the shopkeeper was already out’n’about, at the train depot construction site, having decided to drop by to check out the progress before he had his breakfast with his wife. The work crews hadn’t yet arrived, so the shopkeeper was able to roam the area a bit. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, he took 1 last look around, & drove back home to enjoy the eggs, pancakes & bacon his wife had prepared.
