#1 “Rumour Has It” | Donna Summer
Originally featured on her album ‘Once Upon A Time’, this song was released as a single 03/28/1978. The concept album tells a “fairytale” story of a girl going from rags to riches. This song (1 of the earliest examples of disco, funk, rock & electronica in pop culture) is near the end of the album, when the main character is hoping that someone looking for a girl like her is someone she has liked for a while. The single peaked at #53 on the Billboard Hot 100 & #21 on the R&B Singles charts. Internationally, it reached #19 in England & #21 in Germany.

#2 “Rumor Has It” | Reba McEntire
Nearly 13 years after Summer’s tune, this song hit the airwaves 12/01/1990, spent 20 weeks on the charts & peaked at #3 on early 1991. At the time, it was the 20th song in a string of 26 straight Top 10 tunes for the native of Chockie OK, who starred in broadway & 2 TV sitcoms, a string featuring only 3 songs that didn’t crack the Top 5. This song was immediately preceded by 1990’s chart topping “You Lie” & followed by 1991’s “Fancy”, 1 of the non-Top 5s, reaching only #8.

#3 “Rumor Has It” | Clay Walker
6 years & 2 months after McEntire’s hit bowed, this song debuted 02/01/1997 & spent 20 weeks on the charts, 2 of those at #1. This Beaumont TX-native singer-songwriter-guitarist began his professional career by playing in bars around Texas in 1985. His 1st single, 1993’s “What Is It To You”, & the follow-up tune, 1993-4’s “Live Until I Die”, claimed #1. After his next 2 released fell out of the Top 10 (including 1994’s “Where Do I Fit In The Picture”, #11, a favorite of mine), he notched 3 straight chart toppers with 1994’s “Dreaming With My Eyes Wide Open”, 1994’s “If I Could Make A Living” (somewhat eyebrow raising) & 1995’s “This Woman & This Man”. Other familiar favorites: 1996’s “Hypnotize The Moon” (#2) & 1997-8’s “Then What?” (#2).

#4 “Rumour Has It” | Adele
Released 11/05/2011 (6 days before my 4th open heart surgery) as the 4th single from her album ’21’, this song was written by Adele & Ryan Tedder, but they weren’t inspired by the media; instead, it was aimed at her friends who believed things they heard about her. Sounds familiar…. Critically acclaimed, the single climbed the charts & peaked in 2012 at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100, #27 on the Hot Rock Songs, #8 on the Mainstream Top 40, #4 on the Adult Contemporary & #2 on the Adult Top 40. Internationally, it claimed #1 in South Korea, while notching in the Top 10 in Belgium & Israel at #7. The song has been covered several times since, most-notably by Katharine McPhee during the “The Cost Of Art” episode of the TV series “Smash”.
