SUNDAY STORY

Route 66-based story (by OC,SH’s founder, inspired by his 09/2009 Route 66 road trip)

CHAPTER 68: SPUR OF THE MOMENT & TIME

“Well,” the youngest said, glancing at a clock on the wall, “this has been an absolute blast, & longer than I had planned.”

The eldest just smiled, while the youngest continued speaking into the microphone: “So glad I did this impromptu broadcast from 1 of the conference rooms at the Springfield Illinois Route 66 Hotel & Conference Center, & very glad for those who joined me this evening. Thanks, as always, to Kyle at WSM for putting this broadcast together on such short notice. Be sure to check WSM’s website for times of upcoming broadcasts along Route 66, but for now, it is time to say goodnight. I know, I hate to go, too, but, I do need to get some sleep. It’s nearing 11p here! Good night, everybody!”

The youngest took off his head set, looked at his older brother, & said: “I can’t tell you how much I love radio. & to be broadcasting from Route 66 … my, what a feeling.”

“I can see that,” the eldest said, while the brothers started packing up the equipment.

“That was marvelous,” a manager of the hotel said bursting into the room. “We’ve had such positive feedback already, with what, another broadcast or 2 coming?”

“Well, 1 for sure in the morning,” the youngest replied. “We do need to continue down the road, though.”

“Yes, I know,” the manager said. “Is there anything I can help you with yet tonight?”

“Nah, we’re good,” the youngest said. “My brother & I can handle the equipment.”

“Do you want to leave it in here overnight?” the manager asked.

The youngest thought for a minute, then shook his head: “No, I’d feel better if we left it in the car or in our room.”

“Yeah,” agreed the eldest. “I think we’ll just take it back to our room, so it’s readily available to us when we need to start setting up for tomorrow’s broadcast.”

“Sounds good,” the manager said. “Well, I’ll leave you to it. If there’s anything either of you need, just let me or any of the staff know. We’re very glad to have you with us tonight.”

“Thank you,” the brothers both said simultaneously.

With that, the manager ducked out & the brothers continued with the equipment.

“Anyway,” the youngest said, “sometimes I wish I could be on the radio 24/7/365.”

“Sounds like how I would prefer to be on the road,” the eldest countered.

“Yeah, exactly,” replied the youngest. “I’m just glad we didn’t limit ourselves with a rigid, set schedule for this trip.”

“Me, too,” the eldest said. “If we had, your broadcasts, particularly the impromptu ones as I’m guessing you’ll be doing more of along the way, would be severely limited. That noted, I can certainly see why people DO create an itinerary for a trip like this.”

“Indeed,” the youngest replied. “To both.”

The eldest chuckled.

By now, the equipment was packed up, so the brothers grabbed it & walked back to their room for the night.
