In the final installment of highlighting the history of Chicago’s Children’s Memorial Hospital, I had to showcase this “home away from home”:
When I was a kid, my yearly checkups at the hospital started with an overnight at the Ronald McDonald House located at 622 W Deming in Chicago. We’d leave after dinner & head into Chicago. I remember the parking lot was “shockingly small” (to this kid, anyway, “scared” that “his” 1976 MC might get damaged if parked too close to the other vehicles). Some of the rooms were cramped & you couldn’t always guarantee you’d get to see your favorite shows (it was a communal TV), but … it was reassuring & a good way to sleep without feeling too rushed in the morning before the early (sometimes 7:30a) appointments started. This was an 1880s mansion & has sadly since been torn down.
