Today, Tom uses a background photo to provide depth of scale, critical when shooting small, close-up items. It is a process he came up with after experimenting with background shots from old magazines: scale the background image to the car, print it on heavy stock paper & then place the picture directly behind the car to snap the final photograph. “I’m always on the lookout for backgrounds & have some I haven’t used yet,” Tom told me.
