#1 “Power Of Love” | Charley Pride
This song hit the airwaves 06/09/1984, spent 20 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #9. It was the last in a string of 14 straight Top 10 tunes, dating back to 1979-80’s “Missin’ You” (#2) & including such hits like 1981’s “Roll On Mississippi” (#7), 1981’s “Never Been So Loved” (#1, 2 weeks), 1982’s “I Don’t Think She’s In Love Anymore” (#2), 1982-3’s “Why Baby Why” (#1) & 1983’s “Night Games” (#1). Prior to that stretch, this Sledge MS-native singer-guitarist (who’d played baseball in the Negro Leagues & for several professional minor league teams, trying out for the New York Mets & then California Angels) had 13 straight Top 10s late 1966 to early-mid 1971 & 24 straight Top 10s mid 1971 to mid-late 1979. Familiar favorites during those stretches include 1969’s “Kaw-Liga” (#3, 3 weeks), 1970’s “Is Anybody Goin’ To San Antone” (#1, 2 weeks), 1971’s “Kiss An Angel Good Morning” (#1, 5 weeks; Country Song Grammy), 1978’s “Someone Loves You Honey” (#1, 2 weeks) & 1978’s “Burgers & Fries” (#2, 3 weeks), among many others. He released 13 tunes between late 1984 & late 1989, but only 1 reached the Top 10, 1 of my absolute favorites of his: 1987-8’s “Shouldn’t It Be Easier Than This” (#5).

#2 “Power Of Love” | Huey Lewis & The News
1 year after Pride’s song, this tune burst onto the pop charts, June 1985. Written for the blockbuster 1985 movie ‘Back To The Future’, this song claimed #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 & Top Rock Tracks charts, while reaching #6 on the Adult Contemporary & #22 on the Hot Dance Club Songs charts. It was the band’s 1st BH 100 chart topper & 2nd on the TRT chart. Internationally, the single claimed #1 in Australia & Canada, while notching at #3 in New Zealand, #4 in South Africa, #5 in Ireland, #7 in Zimbabwe, #9 in England, #11 in Switzerland & Italy, #16 in Germany & #17 in Belgium. In the film, the song is heard while Marty (Michael J Fox) skateboards to school & in a Battle Of The Bands audition.
