#1 “Man In The Mirror” | Jim Glaser
This is, sadly, 1 of those songs I’d forgotten about, until I stumbled across it. During my last road trip, 2011’s “Coast-To-Coast” journey, I was traveling on a Sunday evening across US 24 in central IL, just across the Indiana border. I was listening to a classic country show & they played Judy Rodman’s “Girls Ride Horses, Too”, another song I’d forgotten. That evening in the hotel room, I searched for that Rodman song; 1 of the videos in the “suggested” list on the right hand side was this song. I didn’t recognize the title, but I clicked on the link & the instant the music started, I remembered it immediately & was transported to a completely different time. This tune hit the airwaves 08/27/1983, spent 21 weeks on the charts & peaked at #17. At the time, of 15 releases mid 1968 to mid 1983, this was his 2nd Top 20, behind 1982-3’s “When You’re Not A Lady” (#16). His very next release, 1984’s “If I Could Only Dance With You”, became his 1st Top 10, reaching #10. His follow-up release (my favorite song of his) became his 1st & only chart topper: 1984’s “You’re Gettin’ To Me Again”.

#2 “Man In The Mirror” | Michael Jackson
5 years after Glaser’s song was on the radio, this song was released 01/16/1988 from Jackson’s album ‘Bad’. Written by Glen Ballard & Siedah Garrett, Jackson’s recording became 1 of his most critically-acclaimed songs; be sure to watch the video! This single claimed #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 2 straight weeks in 1988 & re-entered playlists after Jackson’s death in 2009. When it was originally released in 1988, the tune also claimed #1 on the Hot Dance Music & R&B charts, while notching at #2 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Elsewhere, the song claimed #1 in Belgium, Canada, Italy & Poland, while reaching #3 in Ireland, #5 in New Zealand & #21 in England. At that time, it was Jackson’s 4th consecutive chart topper from ‘Bad’.
