CHAPTER 60: 1st MEETING FROM OTHER VIEW
While the brothers & their cousin & his wife embarked on the Route 66 drive from Dwight IL to Pontiac IL, the shopkeeper was deciding to head to the business to keep the brothers’ sister company today. As he climbed into his truck to make the brief drive across town to the family’s business, the shopkeeper remembered the 1st time he met the sibling’s parents.
That particular day, he’d made a run to the bank while his wife stayed at their store to mind the shop & take care of customers. As he drove past the family’s business, a voice told him to stop & poke his head in. So, he steered into the business’ lot & just sat there for a minute or 2.
While he walked to the front entrance, he wondered if the people would be receptive to his visit. He took a deep breath, opened the front door & poked his head inside: “Well, would you look at this….,” he’d exclaimed taking in the view as he scanned his eyes across the interior. “You folks open fer business yet?”
He distinctly remembered how time seemed to slow down while he watched the siblings’ parents turn around to look towards the business’ front door. Both of them had a startled & quizzical, yet curious, look on their face. Then, he briefly looked towards their children, who were looking a bit concerned, not scared, just unsure of the stranger who’d opened the door. After a brief exchange of “not yet” & “hope yer establishment works out”, the shopkeeper quickly exited.
Now, sitting in his truck before the drive to the business, he remembered how foolish he’d felt as soon as he’d closed the door that day. He immediately wished he hadn’t darted out so quickly … or, for that matter, stopped in the 1st place. Yet, as the days & months & years went on, he & his wife became good friends with the family & he now felt so blessed to still be part of the siblings’ lives. He smiled to himself, thinking how proud the siblings’ parents would be of their children if either were still alive.
He slowly started his trusty old pickup & headed for the business he’d only briefly seen for the 1st time many years ago.
