CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES
2 songs from the 3rd hour (9p-10p) of my 10/07/1995 college radio show: TG Sheppard’s “Somewhere Down The Line” & Johnny Lee’s “Sounds Like Love”. This show was optional, due to Fall Break; OC,SHer & friend ALLEN K was in the studio with me! Also featured: Ford Wagon photographed by OC,SHer ERIC L in South Dakota….
#1 “Somewhere Down The Line” | TG Sheppard
This song hit the airwaves 06/02/1984 & spent 21 weeks on the country charts, 2 of those at its peak of #3. It was this Humbolt TN-native singer-songwriter-guitarist’s 21st Top 10 tune, coming after a stretch of 11 chart toppers in 13 releases, August 1979 to October 1983. 1 of my memories of this song is hearing it on the country countdown show & the announcer saying at the end of the song, “moving up 5 notches to #10…”. Other favorites include 1979-80’s “I’ll Be Coming Back For More” (#1, 2 weeks), 1980’s “Do You Wanna Go To Heaven” (#1), 1981’s “I Loved ‘Em Every 1” (#1), 1981-2’s “Only 1 You” (#1), 1982’s “Finally” (#1; a favorite of mine), 1982’s “War Is Hell” (#1), 1982-3’s “Faking Love” (#1; duet with Karen Brooks), 1984-5’s “1 Owner Heart” (#4; my favorite of his), 1985’s “You’re Going Out Of My Mind” (#10) & 1986’s “Strong Heart” (#1; his last chart topper).
#2 “Sounds Like Love” | Johnny Lee
This uptempo song debuted 02/05/1983, spent 18 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #6. ~3 years earlier, this Texas City TX-native singer-songwriter-guitarist had become a household name with his 7th release & 1st Top 10, 1980’s “Lookin’ For Love”, which thanks to being in the movie ‘Urban Cowboy’ starring John Travolta, catapulted to the top of the country charts, where it claimed #1 for 3 straight weeks. That tune also crossed over & reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Other favorites include 1981’s “Pickin’ Up Strangers” (#3, 2 weeks), 1981’s “Prisoner Of Hope” (#3), 1981’s “Bet Your Heart On Me” (#1), 1982’s “When You Fall In Love” (#14), 1982’s “Cherokee Fiddle” (#10, with Charlie Daniels & Michael Martin Murphy), 1983’s “Hey Bartender” (#2, 2 weeks), 1984’s “The Yellow Rose” (#1, duet with Lane Brody), 1984’s “You Could’ve Heard A Heart Break” (#1) & 1985’s “Rollin’ Lonely” (#9, his last Top 10 tune).
