CHAPTER 59: FROM RAIN TO SUNSHINE
By the time the 2 brothers, their cousin & his wife were getting on the road, the deluge had reduced to a light drizzle, after a good soaking in the prior hour & a half.
“Not exactly the best weather to start this portion of our trip,” the youngest brother observed while the eldest started the tan 1976 Caprice Classic sedan.
“Yeah, I know,” the eldest replied, wondering if his brother had been in his head 2 hours earlier. “But, we’re bound to get rain sometime along this trip anyway.”
The eldest pulled the Caprice Classic out of the driveway & glanced in the exterior rearview mirror to make sure his cousin had pulled out behind him.
“Besides,” the eldest continued putting the car in drive, releasing the brake pedal & hitting the gas, “forecast is for skies to clear soon, so we should have sunshine fairly quickly.”
The eldest steered the Caprice towards Route 66 & into the parking lot of Dwight IL’s The Old Route 66 Family Restaurant. He rolled down the window & motioned for his cousin to pull up next to them.
“Yyyeessss…?” the cousin’s wife questioned after the cousin had pulled their car up next to the Caprice, such that the wife in the passenger seat was next to the eldest brother in the Caprice’s driver’s seat.
“I just wanted to say I’m glad you both are coming along with this 1st portion down to Pontiac,” replied the eldest. “I think it’ll be cool to have you with us.”
“Yeah, I think so, too,” the cousin yelled from the driver’s seat across his wife in the passenger’s seat. “Now, if only we could get some sunshine.”
“Soon enough,” countered the eldest. “Soon enough.”
After a slight pause of nods & smiles, the eldest continued: “OK, time to get this show really on the road now. I don’t know how often we’ll stop, so just be patient.”
“No worries,” came the words from the cousin. “It’ll be fun being a tourist in our home area.”
The eldest nodded, put the Caprice in drive & eased out of the restaurant’s parking lot. The cousin followed suit, & the 2 cars were headed towards Odell IL. As if on cue, the sunshine started to peak through the clouds.
