CHAPTER 58: TRANSFORMATIONS

The next morning, the eldest was awake first. Technically, he maybe never went to sleep, more like dozed off & on. He was excited & apprehensive, & he couldn’t quite figure out exactly why. It wasn’t like they were rushed, & while they would be meeting “strangers” along the way, with the community that Route 66 is, they were already “family”. So that wasn’t it, either.

Just after 6a, a light rain morphed into a deluge. The eldest kinda groaned, thinking that wasn’t exactly road-trip-inspiring weather. He thought back to the prior day’s sunshine & started thinking maybe he was wrong, maybe they should’ve headed to Pontiac yesterday afternoon. But, then, he quickly reminded himself he can’t control the weather & they’re bound to run into some rain along the way anyway.

He picked up his phone off the night stand & swiped it to check the time. 6:23a. He set the phone back down & lay in the bed, listening to the rain make a drumming noise on the window pane. His thoughts drifted from topic to topic, wondering how his sister was, how the shopkeeper was, etc. He almost called them, but realized it still might be a tad bit early, though perhaps not for the shopkeeper.

The eldest grabbed his phone again to check the time. 6:28a. He put the phone down, threw the covers off himself & rotated to get out of the bed. He knew his brother & cousin & his wife would start to stir in a couple minutes; they had agreed to set alarms for 6:30a to be sure they were all on the road by 8a.

Suddenly, while stepping on the floor for the 1st time that morning, whatever apprehensiveness he had felt was gone. The excitement had fully taken over & the eldest absolutely could not wait to get on the road again. Another hour & a half seemed to stretch out in front of him to eternity, but in reality, it wouldn’t be long now….
