Today’s ad is for the Stephens Salient Six:
“This splendid Coupe, built by a company famous for its fine bodies, is mounted upon the Stephens chassis, which contains the most powerful & most economical engine for its size found in passenger automobiles. Naturally the surpassing excellence of these features in 1 motor car, afford the height of motor car satisfaction in value & in service. Examination will reveal many other features in addition to those approved comforts & luxuries that you would naturally expect in a fine car.”
Based in Moline IL, the company also had a factory in Freeport IL. In 1917, the Moline Plow Company (makers of farm machinery) decided to plunge into the automobile business with a car named after the company founder, GA Stephens. 2 years later (1919), Willys bought the company, keeping it separate from Willys-Overland. The 1921 farm crises caused a huge loss to the Stephens parent company, which promptly took the parent company out of the automobile business, spinning it off as the Stephens Motor Car Company part of Willys-Overland. The Stephens automobile ended in 1924.
