#1 “1 Step Forward” | Desert Rose Band
This song (a favorite of mine for several reasons) hit the airwaves 10/31/1987, spent 25 weeks on the charts & peaked at #2 in early 1988, the band’s 2nd Top 10 behind 1987’s “Love Reunited” (#6). The band formed in California with founding members Chris Hillman (also a founding member of The Byrds & Flying Burrito Brothers), John Jorgenson & Herb Pedersen. The band disbanded in 1994 after a brief career which totaled 8 Top 10s with 2 chart toppers (1988’s “He’s Back & I’m Blue” & 1988-9’s “I Still Believe In You”). 1989’s “She Don’t Love Nobody” was their last Top 5, peaking at #3 for 2 weeks.
#2 “There’s No Love In Tennessee” | Barbara Mandrell
Debuting 03/09/1985, this song spent 20 weeks on the charts & peaked at #7. This is 1 of my favorites of hers & is 1 of those songs you relate to a situation even though it isn’t exactly connected; it debuted just months after my parents traded in “my” car, the 1 that started my automotive love affair. For Mandrell, this came near the end of her career, which stretched mid-September 1969 to early July 1989. This Houston TX-native singer & multi-instrumentalist, who moved to Nashville TN in 1971, is the sister of Louise Mandrell. Barbara hosted own TV show (“Barbara Mandrell & The Mandrell Sister’s”) 1980-1982 then acted on TV’s “Sunset Beach” in 1997. Her singing career was derailed in 1984 by an auto accident, from which she fully recovered. She notched nearly 30 Top 10s, including 6 chart toppers, the most popular of which was 1978’s “Sleeping Single In A Double Bed”.
