#1 “Love Helps Those” | Paul Overstreet
After a brief stint as a member of SKO late 1986 to early 1987 (including 1986-7’s “Baby’s Got A New Baby”, #1), Overstreet embarked on a solo career in late 1987, sparked by 1987-8’s “I Won’t Take Less Than Your Love” (a collaboration with Tanya Tucker & Paul Davis). His prior attempt at a solo career came in 1982 with the release of “Beautiful Baby”, which notched at #76 on the country charts. This song, then, was his 1st solo hit after leaving SKO (which became SKB); be sure to listen to the words. Debuting 09/24/1988, this single spent 21 weeks on the charts, 3 of those at its peak of #3, & was followed by a string of 7 more straight Top 10s, including his only solo chart topper, 1990-1’s “Daddy’s Come Around”. This Antioch MS-native singer-songwriter-guitarist was also married to Freida Parton (Dolly Parton’s sister) 1975-1976.

#2 “Still Taking Chances” | Michael Martin Murphy
I love to relay a personal experience with this song, & in fact, I’d be willing to bet it was this show (09/16/1995) that it happened. In the 1st hour, I played this song … & almost immediately afterward, I received several phone calls into the studio asking who the “new rock artist” was. Every single person seemed surprised when I told them it was actually a country artist & song from over 10 years prior. Hitting the airwaves 11/13/1982, this song spent 20 weeks on the charts & peaked at #3 in early 1983; it crossed over & reached #76 on the Billboard Hot 100. Murphy’s prior release, “What’s Forever For”, had become his 1st country Top 30 & 1st country #1, while reaching #19 on the Billboard Hot 100. His short career (early 1976 to early 1991) also featured familiar favorites like 1983’s “Don’t Count The Rainy Days” (#9), 1984’s “Will It Be Love By Morning” (#7), 1984’s “Disenchanted” (#12), 1985’s “Carolina In The Pines” (#9) & 1987-8’s “I’m Gonna Miss You, Girl” (#3). This Oak Cliff TX-native singer-songwriter-guitarist also acted in the movies ‘Take This Job & Shove It’ & ‘Hard Country’.
