‘Fried Green Tomatoes’ is a 1991 film based on the novel ‘Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe’ by Fannie Flagg. Written by Flagg & Carol Sobieski (who wrote the screenplay for 1982’s ‘Annie’), the movie was directed by Jon Avnet & filmed in Juliette GA. The building chosen for the “star” cafe was a former antiques & hardware store, redesigned as a cafe, complete with a horseshoe-shaped counter allowing for many camera angles. While the inspiration for the novel was Irondale AL’s Irondale Cafe, locals in Juliette GA opened a Whistle Stop Cafe, designed to mirror the film set. The cast includes Kathy Bates, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker, Jessica Tandy, Cicely Tyson, Chris O’Donnell, Stan Shaw, Gailard Sartain, Timothy Scott, Gary Basaraba, Lois Smith, Danny Nelson, Jo Harvey Allen, Macon McCalman, Richard Riehle, Raynor Scheine, Grace Zabriskie, Reid Binion, Nick Searcy & Constance Shulman.
