Saturday’s Leadoff Drive:
7th (& last) behind-the-scenes “set prep”
Scale Model Christmas Cards (set design by OC,SHer TOM G & photography by BILL R) were presented in this theme, 12/21-26/2015. While this is the last of a few days of series info-history, the “keys” of the 6 cards will be revealed 01/04-09/2016. This image is a scene OC,SHer TOM G created in 1989. His model-crafting days began in 1986 while living in Manhattan NY. He made a party invitation for the Statue Of Liberty’s 100th celebration (July 4) using construction paper buildings & 3 models. 3 years later (1989), he created this Holiday image while living in SC. “I discovered the Snow Village buildings, & set up a woefully inadequate set on the dining room table with a few models,” Tom wrote. “Horrible depth of field, really basic scene. The concept was always there; it just needed fine-tuning & tweaking.” Today, Tom uses a background pic to provide depth of scale, which is critical when shooting small, close-up items. The shot is then printed on heavy stock paper, scaled to the car & placed directly behind it. “It’s something I came up with after some trial & error with background shots taken from old magazines,” Tom explained. “I’m always on the lookout for backgrounds & have some I haven’t used yet.”
