CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES
2 songs from the 3rd hour of my 09/09/1995 college radio show: “Stand Up” by Mel McDaniel & “I Thought It Was You” by Doug Stone. Also featured: a car seen by OC,SHer JACKI F R at the Aromas Fair, Watsonville CA….
#1 “Stand Up” | Mel McDaniel
Perhaps an under-rated artist, this Checotah OK-native singer-songwriter-guitarist started performing in 1957 & worked in clubs in Alaska 1971-1973. None of his 1st 13 country releases mid 1976 to early 1981 reached the Top 10; the closest was 1977-8’s “God Made Love” (#11). His 1st Top 10 was 1981’s “Louisiana Saturday Night” (#7). This song debuted 09/14/1985, spent 21 weeks on the charts & peaked at #5; the video is quite entertaining. This single was the 3rd in a string of 3 straight Top 10s, preceded by 1984-5’s “Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On” (#1; his only chart topper) & 1985’s “Let It Roll” (#6). Other familiar favorites include 1981’s “Right In The Palm Of Your Hand” (#10), 1982’s “Big Ole Brew” (#2), 1983-4’s “I Call It Love” (#9) & 1988’s “Real Good Feel Good Song” (#9). He died 03/31/2011 of a heart attack.
#2 “I Thought It Was You” | Doug Stone
This singer-songwriter-guitarist changed his given name, Douglas Brooks, to avoid confusion with Garth Brooks. A native of Marietta GA, Stone began performing in 1963, starred in the 1995 movie ‘Gordy’ & did voice overs for several animated shows. His singing career was short, but sweet, notching 15 straight Top 10s, starting with his debut single, 1990’s “I’d Be Better Off” (#4). This song debuted 07/20/1991, spent 20 weeks on the charts & peaked at #4; in the lyrics, it references an “old Malibu”, which I always picture as a mid 1970s version. This single was sandwiched between a pair of chart toppers: 1991’s “In A Different Light” & 1991-2’s “A Jukebox With A Country Song”. His last #1 tune was 1993’s “Why Didn’t I Think Of That”.
