#1 “Midnight In Montgomery | Alan Jackson
This poignant song debuted 04/25/1992 & spent 20 weeks on the charts, 2 of those at its peak of #3. It was his 10th release & 8th Top 5 tune, 4 of which had claimed #1 for the Newnan GA-native singer-songwriter-guitarist. The former car salesman & construction worker signed with Glen Campbell’s publishing company in 1985. His singing career continues today, having notched 22 additional chart toppers since this single.
#2 “Long Hard Road” | Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
Similar to Exile (FEATURED HERE), this band had its start on the pop charts, including 1980’s “An American Dream” (#13, Billboard Hot 100; with Linda Ronstadt), but soon moved to the country genre. After their 1st country Top 10 (1980’s “Dance Little Jean”, #9), this nostalgic song became their 1st country #1; it hit the airwaves 05/26/1984 & spent 20 weeks on the charts. This single sparked a string of 14 Top 10 tunes, including 2 more chart toppers: 1985’s “Modern Day Romance” & 1987’s “Fishin’ In The Dark”.
