Remember this series!? What catches your spying-eye radar!?
“Magnum, P.I.” originally aired 12/11/1980 – 05/08/1988 on CBS, effectively replacing the long-running “Hawaii 5-O” (1968-1980) to take advantage of the already-established sets in Hawaii. As such, this series recognized the existence of that police unit, with Magnum referencing McGarrett by name in the 1st episode. Interestingly, in 2013, the new version of “Hawaii 5-O” paid tribute to “Magnum”; a further circle-of-life fact: the current “Hawaii 5-O” is followed on Friday nights by “Blue Bloods”, which stars Tom Selleck, who portrayed Magnum. Other cast members of this series include Roger E Mosley, Larry Manetti & John Hillerman. Recurring characters were played by Kwan Hi Lim, Gillian Dobb, Kathleen Lloyd, Jeff MacKay & Joe Santos. Santos, of course, starred in “The Rockford Files”, in which Selleck & Manetti also appeared. This series’ guest stars include Frank Sinatra, Dennis Weaver, Carol Burnett, Tyne Daly, Ted Danson, Pat Morita, Geoffrey Lewis, Noah Berry Jr (also of “The Rockford Files” fame), Morgan Fairchild, Dana Delany & Christine Belford. This show crossed-over with 2 other CBS hits: “Simon & Simon” & “Murder, She Wrote”. “Magnum” was to end with Season 7, with Magnum (a Detroit Tigers fan) being killed off; but, fan outcry led to a Season 8 to round off the series, including an episode entitled “Legend Of The Lost Art”, a parody of the movie ‘Raiders Of The Lost Ark’, a film Selleck lost the title role to Harrison Ford because of his commitments with this series.
