CAR-TUNES SATURDAY

CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

Since I did not keep detailed playlists of the 1st 2 years of my shows, we skip from 11/06/1993 to 2 songs from the 1st hour of my 09/09/1995 college radio show, “Calm Before The Storm” (Restless Heart) & “Everybody’s Sweetheart” (Vince Gill).  Also featured: Ford Mustang, photographed by OC,SHer CHRIS L S at the 2015 Ocean Gate Car Show & a link to a VINYL record….

#1 “Calm Before The Storm” | Restless Heart
On my college radio shows, I loved playing songs not released as singles. Such as the case with this song by Restless Heart, which formed in Nashville TN & had a bunch of hits in the mid to late 1980s. The band notched 6 straight chart toppers mid 1986 to late 1988, including 1986’s “That Rock Won’t Roll”, 1987’s “Why Does It Have To Be”, 1987-8’s “Wheels” & 1988’s “Bluest Eyes In Texas”. This song is on the band’s 3rd studio album, ‘Big Dreams In A Small Town’ (which features charting hits in “The Bluest Eyes In Texas” & “A Tender Lie”); I instantly loved this song the 1st time I heard it because I partly identified with it! Isn’t that the way it usually works? Take a listen, you might be surprised:

#2 “Everybody’s Sweetheart” | Vince Gill
This song debuted 01/30/1988, spent 17 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #11. This was his 10th release, during which stretch this Norman OK-native singer-songwriter-guitarist had only 3 Top 10s: 1985’s “If It Weren’t For Him” (#10; with Rosanne Cash), 1985-6’s “Oklahoma Borderline” (#9) & 1987’s “Cinderella” (#5). His career took off following 1990’s “When I Call Your Name” (#2 for 2 weeks with Patty Lovelace on backing vocals; CMA Single & Song Of The Year; Country Male Vocal Grammy) & he notched 5 chart toppers & almost 20 more Top 10s. As such, I often wonder if this song would’ve faired better had it been released later in his career….
