6 years ago at the time this posts (7a US central) on this day (Tuesday) on this date (09/15), I was anticipating a morning walk & breakfast with OC,SHer JIM H, before traveling from Kingman AZ to Barstow CA during my 2009 Route 66 Road trip. That noted, for THIS entry, Day 14, 09/18/2009, of that trip started in Albuquerque NM & ended in Kearney NE (Lincoln Highway). It was my next-to-last day on the road, my home. I left the hotel ~8a & headed east on I-40 then north on I-25. Since I had to take the “super slab” back, I decided to take a route I hadn’t taken before. Then, as a last “Route 66 hurrah”, I drove a short section of pre-1937 Route 66 (angles north of I-40 through San Jose & Santa Fe, then dives south into Albuquerque & then south of I-40 to Los Lunas, before returning to the I-40 corridor around Correo NM). The section I took, ~30 minutes of drive time, included the Santa Fe Trail, Exit 299 at Glorieta NM to Exit 307 at Rowe NM.
After returning to I-25 at Exit 307, I briefly stopped at Exit 339 to snap a “sign shot” (a pre-1937 Route 66 historic route marker). From there, I traveled I-25 north into Colorado. After a 30-minute stop for lunch & gas just south of Denver CO, I drove through Denver & took I-76 east towards Nebraska. Along I-76, I saw a sign for Haxtun CO, 1 of the places my Mom grew up. Before 7p, I was on I-80 heading east. Even though the “super slab” can be boring & uninspiring, I captured a gorgeous sunset behind me. I arrived in Kearney NE ~9p & stopped for the night.
