CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

THEME = recreation: featuring Gary Morris & Merle Haggard

2 songs from the 8:30p-9:30p timeframe of my 04/20/2007 radio show….

#1
This song debuted 07/28/1984, spent 19 weeks on the country charts & peaked at #7. At the time, it was his 7th straight Top 10, a streak that extended to 12, with 4 chart toppers of the string’s last 5 entries. 1 of those chart toppers was a duet with Crystal Gayle: “Makin’ Up For Lost Time”, featured in TV’s “Dallas”, starring Larry Hagman. During this radio show, I mentioned this song debuted ~1 month after “The Sandberg Game”, 06/23/1984, in which Ryne Sandberg belted 2 game-tying home runs against former Cub & then-current Cardinals closer Bruce Sutter. But, that day (04/20/2007), the Cubs had lost to the Cardinals, the favorite team of a listener & now OC,SHer MARY S.

#2
This song hit the airwaves 05/15/1982 & spent 18 weeks on the charts, 2 of those at its peak of #2. Sure seems even more poignant today, in many ways. A request of a listener of the radio show, this song came in the last 3rd or so of Haggard’s long-running & colorful career. His 1st release came in late 1963 & his last debuted 09/18/1999, a day before my birthday. Between those 2 songs, he notched almost 40 chart toppers. A native of Bakersfield CA, he had served almost 3 years in San Quentin (1957-1960) for burglary; then Governor Ronald Reagan granted him a full pardon 03/14/1972.
