Day 10, 09/14/2009, of my Route 66 road trip started in Williams AZ & ended in Kingman AZ, with notable stops along the way in Monte Carlo, Ash Fork, Crookton Rd Exit, Seligman, Truxton, Valentine & Hackberry. I spent ~45 minutes checking out Williams before heading out for the day’s adventures. About 45 minutes into the drive, I arrived at the eastern gateway to the golden stretch of 159 uninterrupted Route 66 miles at the Crookton Rd exit off I-40. My favorite spot along this stretch was Seligman, where I spent nearly 2 hours. During that time, I met Angel Delgadillo, who owns a barber shop & is the founder of the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona, & ate at the famous (or infamous, depending on how you like their traditions!) Snow Cap. As I was preparing to leave the town, a group of camouflaged GM vehicles arrived, including the “Buick Insignia”, today’s Buick Regal. After a brief stop in Truxton, I spent about a half hour at Hackberry’s General Store, which had been the home of famed Bob Waldmire, who I had met at Laurel’s Afton Station in Oklahoma. I arrived in Kingman ~4:20p, just in time to visit the PowerHouse Visitor Center. On my way to secure a hotel room ~5p, I was at a stoplight on Andy Devine (Route 66) & saw Jim Hinckley in his Jeep going the opposite direction. We both turned around, stopped, briefly chatted & planned to meet for dinner ~6p. After eating at Mr. D’s, Jim drove me around to some areas in Kingman for some gorgeous views. This pic is along a stretch of “Old Trails Road” (original Route 66); just at these boulders, the road curves sharply to the left. Imagine meeting a semi truck in this stretch on a dark night!
Sounds like a really great day. I looked up the Snow Cap and it sounds like a fun place. the blurb I read said that Angel met John Lasiter and is credited in the movie for providing info about the town!
