While hosting my radio shows, I never chose the songs or artists to play in advance, opting to play what “spoke” to me in any given moment. Sometimes, that was difficult as many of the artists have multiple songs I loved to spin. Such is the case here. This song debuted 09/08/1984, spent 22 weeks on the country charts & claimed #1. At the time, it was this W Portsmouth OH-native singer-songwriter-guitarist’s 5th straight chart topper. During his singing career mid 1975 to mid 1992, he notched 18 chart toppers & 8 additional Top 10 tunes. He served in the US Army 1960-1962 & worked in a Huntsville AL steel mill in the early 1970s.

Some songs are able to paint a vivid picture of the story being recited. This song, released January 1992 from his album ‘Rush Street’, is 1 of them, despite its haunting vagueness. It reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100, while claiming #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Internationally, the song peaked in the Top 10 in Australia (#1), Canada (#3), Norway (#7), New Zealand (#7) & Sweden (#6). So, who do you think killed Mary!?
