#2 (cover)
In 2002, Johnny Cash recorded this song for his album, ‘American IV: The Man Comes Around’. His version changes the lyrics to “crown of thorns” to remove profanity & reference his devout Christianity. Released 03/08/2003, this single spent 1 week on the country charts & peaked at #56. However, use in TV series (“Criminal Minds”, “Smallville” & “Person Of Interest”), as well as a critically acclaimed & awarded music video, helped lead to the song being awarded CMA’s Single Of The Year. The song crossed over & reached #33 on the Modern Rock Tracks Chart. Cash died 09/12/2003.
