“The Rookies” aired on ABC, 1972-1976. The pilot episode was an “ABC Movie Of The Week”, 03/07/1972. With the success of Joseph Wambaugh’s book (‘The New Centurions’) & the TV series “Adam-12”, this series tried to humanize police officers & their struggles, a poignant effort given the then-current controversies sparked by incidents in the late 1960s & early 1970s. Produced by Aaron Spelling & Leonard Goldberg, the show’s setting was kept vague, with SCPD standing for Southern California Police Department. Starring in this show were George Stanford Brown, Sam Melville, Michael Ontkean, Kate Jackson, Gerald S O’Loughlin & Bruce Fairbairn. Notable guest stars included Tyne Daly, Cheryl Ladd & William Shatner. “S.W.A.T.” spun off from this series.
