Day 9, 09/13/2009, of my Route 66 road trip started in Holbrook AZ & ended in Williams AZ, with notable stops in Joseph City, Winslow, Meteor City, Meteor Crater, Twin Arrows, Winona, Flagstaff, Bellemont & Parks. Before leaving the Wigwam in Holbrook AZ, Rodger Fox’s Ride For The Relay motorcycle tour stopped by so I could let them see the inside of the place. My original itinerary had me ending the day in Flagstaff; however, we (friends Robert P & JMD had met me at the Wigwam for the overnight & to travel to Flagstaff) arrived ~1:10p. We spent time visiting with Rodger Fox’s group while they finished their lunch & chatted with Jim Conkle who was with them. When Robert & JMD left to head back to the Phoenix AZ area ~2:45p, I decided to travel a bit farther west. After a stop at the Flagstaff Visitor Center, I was stuck at a red light & spotted the Hotel Monte Vista sign while listening to David Nail’s song “Red Light”. Further down the road, I was only able to see the Route 66 Roadhouse (Bellemont AZ) from a distance because the bridge over I-40 was closed for construction. Continuing west, I stopped & spent a few minutes at the Union-Unocal 76 station in Parks AZ; my Dad worked for that company when they had accounting offices in Schaumburg IL (near the Meachum-Golf Rds intersection, where several strip malls are now). After arriving in Williams (last Route 66 town to be bypassed 10/13/1984) ~4:05p, I fell asleep & wasn’t able to capture any “lights” pictures. This image, however, is my favorite from the day:
While in Winslow, we took a stretch of Old Route 66 that dead ends west of town, past Exit 252. While we were on that section, a storm rolled into town & the bridge over several train tracks offered an interesting viewpoint.
What a wonderful trip. You must have learned so much.
