#1
This single was released October 1986 & only managed #72 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. However, internationally, it was a Top 10 in Ireland (#4), Netherlands (#5), Australia (#5) & England (#9). Peter Gabriel was inspired to write it after seeing Dorothea Lange’s Depression-era photographs in a 1973 book “In This Proud Land”. Gabriel originally asked Dolly Parton to sing it with him, but she turned it down. So, he recorded it with Kate Bush for his album ‘So’. Gabriel, the original lead singer for the band Genesis, had a successful solo career, while Bush is a popular English singer-songwriter & producer.
