THEME = duets: Mickey Gilley & Charly McClain, Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson
This edition features a pair of country duos…
#1
This song hit the airwaves 07/16/1983, spent 22 weeks on the charts & claimed #1. It was the 1st of 3 duets this duo recorded, but their only chart topper together. The other 2: 1984’s “Candy Man” (#5) & 1984’s “The Right Stuff” (#14). For the Natchez MS-native Gilley, a cousin of Jerry Lee Lewis, this song was his 17th chart topper & was the last song in a streak of 4 straight, sparked by 1982’s “Put Your Dreams Away”. Along with his successful singing career, he acted in the movie ‘Urban Cowboy’ & guest-starred on an episode of TV’s “Murder, She Wrote”, along with Jimmy Dean. For the Jackson TN-native McClain, this was her 2nd chart topper (behind 1980-1’s “Who’s Cheatin’ Who”). Her only other chart topper was 1985’s “Radio Heart”; she notched 11 other Top 10 tunes, including 1981’s “Sleepin’ With The Radio On” (#4).
#2
During my radio shows, I focused on the “lesser known” songs because those sometimes spark more memories. However, I also enjoyed spinning the tunes everyone knows, such as this hit. Debuting 01/21/1978, this song spent 16 weeks on the country charts, 4 of those at #1; it also won the Country Vocal Duo Grammy. Crossing genres, this single reached #42 on the Billboard Hot 100. For the Littlefield TX-native Jennings, who narrated TV’s “The Dukes Of Hazzard”, this was 1 of 15 chart toppers in his career. For the Abbott TX-native Nelson, who also worked as a DJ in Fort Worth TX, this was 1 of 19 #1 tunes.
