Composed by Neil Diamond, this song was originally recorded by him. However, the 1st recording to be released as a single was The Monkeys’ version, which hit the airwaves 11/12/1966 from their album ‘More Of The Monkees’. This single, produced by Jeff Barry with lead vocals by Micky Dolenz, claimed #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 7 weeks.

This song has been covered by a plethora of artists, including The 4 Tops & Barbara Mandrell, but 1 of the most-successful covers was this version, by Smash Mouth for the movie ‘Shrek’ soundtrack (2001). Released from the movie soundtrack as well as the band’s self-titled album, this single reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100.
