Day 6, 09/10/2009, of my Route 66 road trip started in Clinton OK & ended in Amarillo TX, with notable stops in Canute OK, Elk City OK, Sayre OK, Erick OK, Texola OK, Shamrock TX, McLean TX, Groom TX & Conway TX. The day started at the Route 66 Museum in Clinton, where I re-connected with Bruce & Gail, an Australian couple I met at Gary’s station in Missouri & Melba’s Cars On the Route in Kansas. For the rest of the trip, we swapped Emails & stories. [July 2012, they stopped in Elgin IL for an overnight just to see me!] Among the Route 66 characters I met this day were Harley & Annabelle in Erick OK. But, just before I arrived there, I stopped here, west of Sayre OK & north of Hext OK, to take in this sight. Throughout the trip, I was intrigued by the road layout. Along here is a stretch of 4-lane Route 66 with the interstate built nearby. Now, this 4-lane Route 66 is 2-lane (2 lanes abandoned). I took this pic while standing in the median between the still-in-use 2 lanes & abandoned 2 lanes of Route 66. The semis depict where the “superslab” is; the semi on the right is traveling west & the semi on the left is traveling east.
