THEME = Remake Wednesday: original (Don Henley) & cover (The Ataris)
A look at a song originated in 1984 & covered in 2003….
#1 (original)
Don Henley (Eagles vocalist & drummer) wrote this song with Mike Campbell & originally released it 10/29/1984 as the 1st single from his 1984 solo album ‘Building The Perfect Beast’. This song peaked in 1985 at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart & claimed #1 for 5 weeks on the Top Rock Tracks chart. Elsewhere, it notched at #7 in Ireland, #12 in England, #15 in Canada, #18 in Germany & #18 in New Zealand. In 1986, Henley won the Best Male Rock Vocal Performance Grammy Award for this song.
#2 (cover)
The Ataris recorded this song in 2003 for their album ‘So Long, Astoria’. This single was officially released 09/08/2003 as the 2nd single after a radio station began to play it. To be a bit more appropriate for the age group of their fans, The Ataris’ version references a “Black Flag sticker” instead of a “Deadhead sticker”. Their version peaked at #20 on the Billboard Hot 100, #36 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks & #2 on the Modern Rock Tracks charts. Internationally, the song notched at #24 in Australia & #17 in New Zealand.
