CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

THEME = duets: Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald, Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder

Sundays are generally special, as are duets. Seems appropriate to pair the 2. Get it!? For this 1st edition, a pair of rock duets, 1 from 1986 & 1 from 1982….

#1
Neither Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald had a solo chart topper until this tune, partially because both had been busy leading their respective groups. The 2 met in person AFTER this song (recorded on different coasts) was already receiving radio airplay. The 1st time they met? Burbank CA when they performed on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson”! This single hit the airwaves 03/22/1986 from the album ‘Winner In You’ & claimed #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 3 straight weeks; it also reached #2 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Internationally, it peaked in the Top 10 in Canada (#1), Netherlands (#1), New Zealand (#4) & England (#2).

#2
The longest-running solo chart topper for either Paul McCartney or Stevie Wonder is this tune, a duet they recorded in the early 1980s. Released 03/29/1982 from the album ‘Tug Of War’, this song claimed #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 7 straight weeks. It also claimed #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, while also topping charts in Canada, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Norway, Spain & England. This single notched in the Top 5 in Australia (#2), Austria (#3), Sweden (#2) & Switzerland (#2).
