HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY! To celebrate, 4 (get it!?) songs for the Holiday: Martina McBride, Simon-Garfunkel, Billy Joel & Neil Diamond.
#1
Martina McBride’s “Independence Day” debuted 05/07/1994, spent 20 weeks on the charts & peaked at #12. Despite not entering the Top 10, the song won the CMA Song Of The Year award for the Medicine Lodge KS native.
#2
Simon & Garfunkel’s “America” hit the airwaves 04/03/1968 from their 4th studio album ‘Bookends’. When it was later released as a single (1972), it peaked at #97 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Paul Simon was inspired to write the song by a 1964 road trip.
#3
Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start The Fire” was released 09/27/1989 from his album ‘Storm Front’ & claimed #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, while reaching #5 on the Adult Contemporary & #6 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks charts. Joel wrote the song about over 100 headline events from 1949 (year of his birth) to 1989.
#4
Neil Diamond’s “America” was 1st heard in 1980 on his ‘The Jazz Singer’ album; it peaked in 1981 at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 & #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts. Along with being patriotic, it was the 2nd song played by New York’s WHTZ.
