CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

SPOTLIGHT = Toad The Wet Sprocket (2 songs) & Tonic (1 song)

A band formed by high school friends & a band from Los Angeles CA….

#1a
Toad The Wet Sprocket formed in 1986 by Glen Phillips, Todd Nichols, Randy Guss & Dean Dinning, all of whom knew each other while at San Marcos High School just outside Santa Barbara CA. Released 04/07/1992 as the 2nd single form the band’s 3rd album ‘fear’, this song is their breakthrough hit; it peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100, #22 on the Modern Rock Tracks & #14 on the Adult Contemporary charts. This single enjoyed further recognition as featured music in TV series: “Doogie Howser MD”, “Dawson’s Creek”, “Reunion” & “Homeland”.

#1b
After further mainstream success with 1992’s “Walk On The Ocean” & 1994’s “Fall Down”, the band released their 5th album ‘In Light Syrup’, a collection of B-sides & rare tracks. This song, my favorite of theirs, is the only official release from that album. This single hit the airwaves 10/31/1995 & peaked in early 1996 at #20 on the Modern Rock Tracks & #19 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks charts.

#2
Tonic formed in 1993 in Los Angeles CA by Emerson Hart & Jeff Russo. Though the band had 3 widely-successful songs, some consider them a ‘1-hit Wonder’, thanks to this song, their only Billboard Hot 100 Top 20. This single debuted 04/30/1997 as the 3rd release from their debut album ‘Lemon Parade’ & peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, #3 on the Modern Rock Tracks & #1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks charts. Internationally, this song claimed #1 in Canada & reached #20 in Australia. The band’s other 2 widely-successful songs were 1996’s “Open Your Eyes” & 1999’s “You Wanted More” (used in the film ‘American Pie’).
