SPOTLIGHT = Sinead O’Conner (1 song) & Odyssey (1 song)
An Irish artist & a band originally NY-based (now England-based)….
#1
Sinead O’Conner is an Irish singer-songwriter, widely considered a ‘1-hit wonder’, despite her many releases. This song (originally was written & composed by Prince for 1 of his side projects, The Family) became O’Conner’s only chart topper. Her arrangement was released 01/08/1990 as the 2nd single from her 2nd studio album ‘I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got’; the rendition reflects on her mother’s death, which happened the same year that The Family’s lone album was released. This single claimed #1 for 4 straight weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 & also claimed #1 on the Alternative Songs chart; it reached #2 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Internationally, it topped 15 charts in 14 countries.
#2
Odyssey was originally a New York-based band (which started as Connecticut’s Lopez Sisters group) & is now based in England. This song, written by Sandy Linzer & Denny Randell, is their best-known single; it was released in 1977 & peaked in 1978 at #21 on the Billboard Hot 100, #3 on the Dance Club Play, #6 on the R&B & #28 on the Adult Contemporary charts. This song has appeared in the TV show “Good Times” & in movies, including 1978’s ‘Eyes Of Laura Mars’, 1998’s ’54’, 2006’s ‘A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints’ & 2007’s ‘The Nanny Diaries’; it also was used as a commercial for “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”.
