A band from Aberdeen WA & a band from Anaheim CA….
#1
Nirvana formed in 1987 by Kurt Cobain & Krist Novoselec in Aberdeen WA, establishing itself as part of the Seattle grunge scene. This song, written by frontman Cobain, was released 03/03/1992 as the 2nd single from the band’s 2nd studio album ‘Nevermind’; this single peaked at #32 on the Billboard Hot 100 & #3 on both the Mainstream Rock & Alternative Songs charts that year. Elsewhere, it reached the Top 10 in Ireland (#7), New Zealand (#3) & England (#9). Other popular songs from this group include 1991’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, 1993’s “All Apologies” & 1994’s “About A Girl”.
#2
No Doubt formed in 1986 in Anaheim CA by Gwen Stefani, Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont & Adrian Young. This song, released 04/15/1996 as the 3rd single from the band’s 3rd studio album, 1994’s ‘Tragic Kingdom’, was very popular despite not charting on the Billboard Hot 100; rules at the time required commercial single for charting. Instead, this single claimed #1 for 16 non-consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart & became the most-widely-played song in 1996. On other United States charts, this single reached #2 (Modern Rock Tracks) & #6 (Adult Contemporary); internationally, it claimed #1 on 12 charts. Other popular songs of this group include 1995’s “Just A Girl”, 2001’s “Hey Baby” & 2003’s “It’s My Life”. Stefani, of course, had a solo career, highlighted by 2005’s “Hollaback Girl”.
