SPOTLIGHT = Sheena Easton (1 song) & ELP (1 song)
A Scottish solo artist & an English trio….
#1
Sheena Easton is a Scottish artist & stage-TV-film actress. This song, her 2nd release (following 1980’s “Modern Girl”), was originally “9 to 5”, but was retitled “Morning Train” to avoid confusion with Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5”. This single was originally released 05/16/1980 in England, then in February 1981 in the United States; it claimed #1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 & Adult Contemporary charts, & #1 in Australia, Canada & New Zealand. Other familiar tunes include 1981’s “For Your Eyes Only” & most-notably her 1983 duet with Kenny Rogers, “We’ve Got Tonight”.
#2
Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP) was a sporadically-active English trio consisting of Keith Emerson, Greg Lake & Carl Palmer; despite their sporadic nature, they are one of the most-popular & commercially-successful progressive rock bands. Written by Lake, this song was released August 1972 & became their best-charting song in the United States, reaching #39 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their only other Top 50 in the United States was 1970’s “Lucky Man” (#48); meanwhile, their best-charting song was 1977’s “Fanfare For The Common Man”, which reached #2 in England. During my 2011 “Coast-to-Coast” road trip, 1 of my stops was to visit my friend, Ray Buck (died 02/27/2014); he gave me a copy of Keith Emerson’s book, ‘Pictures Of An Exhibitionist’. I read it later that year & still have it.
