CD SHOWCASE MEMORIES

SPOTLIGHT = Del Amitri (1 song) & Dire Straits (1 song)

A Scottish band & a British band….

#1
Del Amitri, a Scottish alternative rock band, formed in Glasgow in 1983, after a teenaged Currie posted an ad in the window of a music store asking for people who could play to contact him. Considered a ‘1-hit wonder’ in the United States, this song is their best-charting tune. Released 06/13/1995 from their album ‘Twisted’, this single reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 & #4 on the Adult Contemporary charts, & was featured in TV shows “Beavis & Butt-head”, “Family Guy” & “Hindsight”.

#2
Dire Straits, a British rock band, formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler, John Illsley & Pick Withers. Their sound had various influences: jazz, folk & blues. While not their best-charting tune, this single seems to be their most-played these days. Released 11/29/1985 as the 4th single from their album ‘Brothers In Arms’, this song peaked in early 1986 at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 & #4 on the Adult Contemporary charts. Internationally, it reached the Top 10 in 5 other countries: Canada (#7), Ireland (#1), New Zealand (#3), South Africa (#2) & England (#2). The band’s best-charting single was 1985’s “Money For Nothing”; other familiar tunes include 1978’s “Sultans Of Swing” & 1991’s “Calling Elvis”.

  1. Del Amitri had a lot of great songs. We listened to Change Everything a lot when I worked in the music store. I think Change Everything is actually a better album than Twisted.
