This Mississippi-native singer-songwriter was married to George Jones (1969-1975) & is known as “The 1st Lady Of Country Music”. She died 04/06/1998 of a blood clot.

This song, her 4th overall release, debuted 08/26/1967 & spent 20 weeks on the charts, 3 of those at #1, her 1st solo chart topper; this single won her a Country Female Vocal Grammy. Her prior release, 1967’s “My Elusive Dreams”, a duet with David Houston, had claimed #1 for 2 weeks. Her 1st 2 releases, 1966-7’s “Apartment #9” & 1967’s “Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad” had notched at #44 & #3 (2 weeks), respectively.

This song hit the airwaves 05/18/1968 & spent 17 weeks on the charts, 3 of those at #1. It followed a duet with David Houston, 1968’s “It’s All Over”, which failed to crack the Top 10, peaking at #11. Her prior solo single, 1968’s “Take Me To Your World”, had claimed #1. This single sparked a string of 15 straight Top 10s, all but 2 of which were Top 5s.

Debuting 10/19/1968, this song spent 21 weeks on the charts, 3 of those at #1. It became a signature tune, winning her 2 Grammys: Hall Of Fame & Country Female Vocal. This single crossed over & reached #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was the 2nd of 15 straight Top 10s & 2nd of 4 straight chart toppers, followed by 1969’s “Singing My Song” (2 weeks) & 1969’s “The Ways To Love A Man” (2 weeks). Early 1970s tunes in this streak include 1970’s “He Loves Me All The Way” (#1, 3 weeks), 1971’s “We Sure Can Love Each Other” (#2, 3 weeks), 1972’s “Bedtime Story” (#1) & 1972’s “My Man” (#1).

After 1972-3’s “Old Fashioned Singing” (duet with George Jones) halted the streak of 15 straight Top 10s when it stalled at #38, 1972-3’s “’Til I Get It Right” returned her to the top of the charts. This song, the follow-up, debuted 04/07/1973, spent 17 weeks on the charts & claimed #1. A duet with George Jones that debuted the same day, “Let’s Build A World Together”, peaked at #32, but her next release, 1973’s “We’re Gonna Hold On” (another duet with George Jones), claimed #1 for 2 weeks.

Mid 1970s tunes include 1974’s “Woman To Woman” (#4) & 1975’s “A Mother” (#4). Her last release in 1975, “I Still Believe In Fairy Tales”, peaked at #13. Then, this song, debuted 02/14/1976, spent 15 weeks on the charts & claimed #1; it was her 1st release following her divorce with George Jones. Ironically, it sparked a string of 4 straight chart toppers, 2 of which were duets with Jones: 1976’s “Golden Ring” & 1976-7’s “Near You” (2 weeks). Her other solo chart topper in that stretch was 1976’s “You & Me” (2 weeks). 3 more releases stretched the Top 10 string to 7. ~3 years later, this song was a #3 hit as a duet for Kenny Rogers & Dottie West (1979).

This song hit the airwaves 03/27/1982, spent 17 weeks on the charts & peaked at #8; it was her last solo Top 10. Her last Top 10 was 1985’s “Sometimes When We Touch”, a duet with Mark Gray that notched at #6. Between mid 1980 & mid 1995, she had released 27 singles.
