This singer-dancer-actress-author was born Anna Mae Bullock. Known best by her stage name, her career has spanned more than a half century. Born in the southeastern US, she is now a citizen of Switzerland.

After releasing 9 non-charting solo singles in the late 1970s, she finally struck it big with this song, her 3rd release from her 5th solo album ‘Private Dancer’. This single debuted 06/04/1984 & claimed #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; it also reached #8 on the Adult Contemporary & #2 on the R&B charts. Elsewhere, it peaked at #1 in Australia & Canada, while notching in the Top 10 of 11 other charts, including Austria (#4), Germany (#7), Ireland (#4), Norway (#10), South Africa (#2), Spain (#2), Sweden (#4), Switzerland (#8) & England (#3). The song had been offered to many artists prior, including Donna Summer. 2 other releases from ‘Private Dancer’ peaked in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100: 1984’s “Better Be Good To Me” (#5) & 1985’s “Private Dancer” (#7).

The theme song to the 1985 film ‘Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome’, Turner’s solo version was released 07/29/1985. In the movie, she played Aunty Entity & performed the song with Mel Gibson. On the charts, the song peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, #3 on the R&B & #3 on the Adult Contemporary charts. Elsewhere, it notched in the Top 5 of 16 other charts, including #1 on 6 of those: Germany, Australia, Switzerland, Poland, Canada & Spain.

Her last Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 of the mid 1980s was 1986’s “Typical Male” (#2). She then disappeared from the charts in 1987 & 1988 before making a bit of a comeback in 1989 with this song. Released as the lead single from her album ‘Foreign Affair’, it debuted 09/02/1989 & peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; it also peaked in the Top 5 of 6 other charts: Australia (#4), Austria (#2), Canada (#4), Germany (#4), Switzerland (#3) & England (#5). Originally recorded & released by Bonnie Tyler a year earlier, the song has also been used by various sports teams, in ceremonies & in TV series.

While she continued to release songs in the 1990s, this is her best chart performer from that decade. Released 04/23/1993 from the soundtrack of her autobiographical film ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’, this song peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, her only Top 30 on that chart in that stretch. The song claimed #1 in Canada & notched at #11 in Switzerland & #7 in Canada.

  1. I’m surprised as I always knew her to have grow up in Newark, NJ with her Aunt Aretha Franklin and another famous Aunt.
