ARTIST SPOTLIGHT = The Supremes (3 songs)
Founded as the Primettes (Detroit MI, 1959), this female group & premier 1960s Motown Records act is America’s most-successful vocal group, with 12 #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. They also rivaled the Beatles in worldwide popularity.
#1
After 6 releases (1962 to early 1964) failed to crack the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart (with only 1 entering the Top 60, peaking at #23), they scored their 1st chart topper in 1964’s “Where Did Our Love Go”. This song, the follow-up release, hit the airwaves 09/17/1964 & topped the chart for nearly a month (10/25/1964 – 11/21/1964). Their next release, 1964’s “Come See About Me” also topped the chart.
#2
Their 1st release in 1965, this song hit the airwaves 02/08/1965, & became their 4th straight chart topper on the Billboard Hot 100. The 5th & final song in that streak was 1965’s “Back In My Arms Again”. This song, tho, lost the 1966 Best Contemporary Rock & Roll Group Vocal Performance Grammy to the Statler Brothers’ “Flowers On The Wall”.
#3
Between mid 1965 & early 1966, only 1 of 4 charting songs topped the Billboard Hot 100: 1965’s “I Hear A Symphony”. This song debuted 07/25/1966 & returned the group to top of the charts prominence with a 2-week stay at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 & sparking a streak of 4 straight chart toppers, including 1966’s “You Keep Me Hangin’ On”, 1967’s “Love Is Here & Now You’re Gone” & 1967’s “The Happening”. Later #1 tunes include 1968’s “Love Child” & 1969’s “Someday We’ll Be Together”.
